Equipment is an item that can be equipped by a character to enable certain actions or provide an effect.

Outfit

An outfit is a set of clothing or armor that can be worn by a character. Outfits are used instead of individual pieces of clothing/armor, and wearing unconnected pieces together results in a haphazard outfit. An outfit may consist of pieces covering the torso, arms, legs, hands, feet, and/or head. Some outfits allow swapping out certain pieces without losing the outfit's effect. Some outfits can only be worn by members of a particular species or creatures of a certain size.

Outfits typically provide a passive effect, either in social situations or combat. Some outfits can also be damaged or destroyed to produce a one-time effect. Damaged outfits can still be worn but provide no benefit until repaired, while a destroyed outfit can't be worn anymore. If one outfit could reasonably be worn over another, the wearer may do so but will only gain the benefit of the outermost outfit.

Most PCs will start a game with a travel outfit, which clearly labels the character as a traveler but doesn't provide any effects.

Pack

A pack, or backpack, is used to carry the bulk of a character's items. All items have a size, and the combined size of all items in a pack cannot exceed its capacity.

Retrieving something from a pack takes time, so it requires an action during combat. Use a belt for items that require quick access.

Most PCs will start a game with a common pack, which has a capacity of 12.

Accessory

An accessory can be worn to provide an effect. Accessories may be worn in addition to an outfit unless it would interfere with the outfit's function. No more than one accessory can be worn on each body part, with a total limit of 7 accessories (head, torso, right arm, left arm, waist, left leg, right leg). Creatures with more limbs cannot exceed the 7 accessory limit, but may be able to wear more accessories of a certain type (4 arm accessories for instance). Wearing an accessory may change how other characters react, regardless of the outfit worn.

One of the most common accessories is a belt. A belt is used to carry items meant to be easily accessible. Anything kept on a belt can be accessed and stowed without an action during combat and other urgent situations. Unlike packs, belts hold items by quantity regardless of size. However, belts may be limited to specific items and items that would obviously not fit on a belt can't be stored on a belt. Belts are the only accessory that can be worn in the waist slot and many can be worn on other body parts too. Most PCs will start a game with a common belt, which can hold 1 item.

Example: Night vision goggles can be worn with any outfit that doesn't cover the wearer's eyes.

  • They can be worn with a travel outfit, because it doesn't have a head component.
  • They can be worn with an invisibility outfit, because the head component does not obstruct the wearer's eyes.
  • They can not be worn with a suit of armor, because the head component does obstruct the wearer's eyes.

Weapon

A weapon is used to inflict harm. Weapons can deal damage and may have additional effects.

A character can use any weapon unskilled, but many skills apply to only a small set of weapons. Some skills may overlap, such as two-handed weapons and swords.
