From AP Wiki

Hammarholm is the capital city of Bhur. The bustling city is built directly into the face of Mount Hammar at an altitude of 3,200-3,900 meters.

Environment

Climate

Hammarholm has a highland climate with a blend of subtropical and subpolar characteristics. The high altitude produces temperatures that are consistently cool to mild throughout the year, around 0 to 15 °C, but the low latitude introduces large variations which can cause the temperature to dip below -12 °C or reach as high a 25 °C. Night-time temperatures range from cold in the summer to below freezing in the winter.

The city has a relatively dry climate, with rainfall occurring mainly during in the warmer summer months. Heavy rains can occur throughout summer, often causing flooding and destructive mudslides. It occasionally snows in the winter, but usually only in light flurries overnight that melt by noon.

Fauna

Llamas, alpacas, and mountain goats are the most common domesticated animals in the region. The former are used as pack animals and all are used for meat and wool.

Water supply

The city receives its drinking water from glaciers and rivers in the Steele mountain range. 20-30% of its water is fed by glaciers, the remainder coming from rainfall and snowmelt.

Population

Hammarholm has an estimated population of ~193,000 people. It is one of the most populous cities in the world, and the most populous city without a nearby mana spring. The population is mostly Bhurian dwarves, with a small percentage of non-dwarf travelers, merchants, and artisans. Most inhabitants work in the mines, fields, or maintain the city's infrastructure.

Economy

Hammerholm has a very strong economy due to the large amount of exports and stable government.

Industry

Hammarholm has two major industries: mining and smithing. A few large scale mines and many artisenal mines in Mount Hammar, as well as the neighboring Mount Rhine, Titan Mountain, and King's Peak, produce a large variety of metals including iron, gold, silver, nickle, titanium, platinum, and rhenium. All these metals are in turn refined and processed into bars or finished products for export.

In addition to the metals industry, there is substantial agriculture present in the valleys and mountainsides, producing much of the maize, potatoes, and grain consumed by the city's residents.

Sports

Hammarholm is home to some of the biggest ironball teams in Bhur.

  • Club Bhur: Named in honor of the Prospector Greybeard Bhur, the team has won most of the tournaments national and international championships in the last 20 years, and is the largest team, by number of fans, of the country.
  • The Strongest: The club is known for training in brutal conditions and holds the most records of any ironball team. Their games are a feat of strength and discipine, and their astonishing moves can rile the cheers of the opposing team's fans.
  • Hammarholm I.C.: The newest of the three clubs quickly rose through the ranks to become the third major club in the capital, only behind in popularity to the two well-established city rivals.

The Steeleblood Stadium in Hammarholm houses the world's largest ironball stadium, with the largest court measuring 147 meters above water level.

Transportation

The Hammarholm Railway provides transportation between Hammarholm and the port city of Porgrunn. This reduces the travel time between the two cities from 3-4 days to just under a day.

Politics

Hammarholm is the capital city and political center of Bhur. Bhur is a timocracy, ruled by the heads of the major land-owning families. These families refer to their people as their clan, and politically maneuver to imporve the conditions of their clan. Although there are significant disparities between the working class and the head families, the competition between the clans does provide acceptable living conditions to most citizens of the country, as having sick, homeless, or generally uncared for citizens is seen as highly dishonorable and weakens the clan's political power.
